Chapter 10
Phantasm
It had taken a good deal of time to settle their plans, so when the group had finished their planning, and Dolor had finally put down the book, it was time for them to rest. They made sure they would be ready to leave at first light the next day. Hanna was pleased to be cooking for five now. She was even more pleased that she would not be spending the next few weeks alone. She and Ephraim had been friends for years, so she said she felt blessed to enjoy his company while everyone else was away. She also said she would miss feeding Silver’s creature, and told Silver it was kind of her to tell her that the creature would miss being fed by her. Then, they left.
Dolor had decided their destination the night before. He had handed the mailbox key to Ephraim that morning. This was not to be the end of it, though. It was not until they were ready to leave that Vehemence saw Silver’s creature for the first time. It took a moment for the group to settle after his shock. Silver followed Dolor into the carriage, and sat opposite him. Vehemence chose his seat beside Silver, and they finally departed.

Dolor had recently heard rumors of a group of bandits along this stretch of road. It was common to pass fledgling bandits close to the bay, but none of them would attack a carriage full of people who wore Dolor’s symbol. Bandits closer to the mountains would attack them, however, so Dolor had told the company to be prepared. Not many people used these roads anymore, so it was quiet, and their carriage looked expensive. When they began traveling that road, the group did not enjoy the quiet.
The dark was beginning to conquer the sky, and the fleeing light took the last of the day’s warmth with it. Silver was asleep in the carriage. She only woke to eat, and ate a huge portion then. Silver had told the group that the creature need not sleep while she did, nor eat when she did. Even after this explanation, the whole situation was perplexing.
Vehemence brought his own particular share of confusion. He sat next to Silver, rocking with the carriage. He took a deep breath, then lay his head back to rest. The beast within him, however, shook him awake.
“Damn it! I cannot play now!” Vehemence whispered to his creature. However, the vibrations under his skin did not cease. This had happened once before, when Blaze was training him. The creature had been warning him then…Something was wrong.
Vehemence got up, took hold of the door handle, then swung on the door to hang outside of the carriage.
“Close the door,” Dolor muttered in his state of restless almost-sleep, and stretched into the seat that Vehemence had just vacated. Vehemence took hold of the side of the carriage, kicked the flapping door shut, and crawled onto the seat above the creature. Silver’s creature also seemed to sense that something was wrong.
